About the Ideal Weight Calculator

This calculator estimates ideal body weight (IBW) using four classic formulas developed for clinical dosing and nutrition. Each formula uses gender and height (typically converted to inches) and gives a slightly different answer.

Formulas (height in inches; 1 cm = 0.393701 in)

  • Devine (1974):
    • Male: 50 + 2.3 × (height_in − 60)
    • Female: 45.5 + 2.3 × (height_in − 60)
  • Robinson (1983):
    • Male: 52 + 1.9 × (height_in − 60)
    • Female: 49 + 1.7 × (height_in − 60)
  • Miller (1983):
    • Male: 56.2 + 1.41 × (height_in − 60)
    • Female: 53.1 + 1.36 × (height_in − 60)
  • Hamwi (1964):
    • Male: 48 + 2.7 × (height_in − 60)
    • Female: 45.5 + 2.2 × (height_in − 60)

Each result is in kilograms. For heights below 5 ft (60 in), the term (height_in − 60) becomes negative and the formulas continue to apply.

Frequently asked questions

Why are there four different answers? Each formula was derived from different population studies and clinical contexts. They agree on the broad trend but differ in detail.

Which one is best? Devine is the most widely used in clinical practice. Robinson and Miller tend to give slightly lower estimates. Hamwi is older and still used in nutrition.

Does IBW account for muscle mass? No. IBW is a population-level estimate and does not account for body composition. Athletes with high muscle mass may weigh more than IBW without being unhealthy.

Are these formulas valid for short or tall people? The formulas were validated around average heights; very short or very tall individuals may get less reliable results.
